College Football Maps

This series of maps came about in a confluence of personal fandom of college football and a niche product category. I developed a new basemap on which to overlay every Power 5 team’s stadium to scale and accurately oriented. The maps became a fascinating case study in proximity, capacity, and orientation of stadiums I’d seen only on TV, and one I’d visited dozens of times.

B1G: now bi-coastal

After the addition of four Pac-12 teams to a traditionally midwestern conference, a map of the new super-conference became a map of the entire US.

With the new larger extent, some stadiums appeared too close to each other, which makes labeling a unique challenge.
To keep the labels clear and consistent and to reinforce the importance of each stadium's geographical position, I chose to place the labels outside of this location.

I used colored lines to match the stadium to the label in the dense area in the Midwest.
In both areas, but more apparently in southern California, I used a lightening blend mode to accurately place the stadiums while still displaying the unique shape of both.
